Full Steam Ahead

Progress comes in leaps and bounds interspersed with periods of waiting. But the intent to preserve the depot is alive and strong. Our hopes are to build and further the momentum to maintain public access to this ancient part of New Hampshire and to preserve the depot, land, and heritage that comes with it.

Seven to Save Designation

The Seven to Save designation is recognized for bringing statewide attention to historic resources. It will support efforts by the Newington Historical Society and Historic District Commission to raise awareness and build a fundraising network to preserve the depot. Plans to create a railroad history museum and to develop public access to Bloody Point will have far reaching efforts beyond the Town of Newington.

Historical Society Part of Effort to Save the Depot

In November 2021 various federal, state, and local parties agreed to stipulations for mitigating the expected dismantling and replacement of the General Sullivan Bridge. Parties working to own and preserve the Newington railroad depot include the Newington Historical Society.

Bloody Point Historic District Not Eligible for National Register

Newington's Historic District Commission requested consideration of the locally designated Bloody Point Historic District for National Register listing during Section 106 consultation. New Hampshire's Division of Historical Resources completed the survey and determined Bloody Point ineligible for the National Register due to its loss of integrity.

The Spaulding Turnpike expansion projects over the last 20 years have done little to benefit Newington. With the State's determination to destroy the General Sullivan Bridge rather than preserve it as it had agreed to do in 2008, the local HDC entered the fray to advocate for real historic preservation.
